12th Fail box office collection Day 1
On the first day of its release, the box office collection of the film “12th Fail” fell short of expectations. Despite the anticipation that Kangana Ranaut’s film “Tejas” would dominate the weekend, it was Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest offering that unexpectedly stole the spotlight.
The drama film 12th Fail, featuring Vikrant Massey as an IPS aspirant, was recently released in theaters alongside Kangana Ranaut’s action film Tejas. Despite the anticipation that Tejas, being a more prominent film, would surpass 12th Fail in terms of performance, the disparity between the two movies is minimal.
Helmed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 12th Fail has earned Rs 1 crore on its opening day, as per the industry tracker Sacnilk. 12th Fail managed an overall occupancy of 9.09% in the Hindi-speaking market. By comparison, Kangana’s Tejas stood just Rs 25 lakh ahead of the Vikrant Massey-starrer as it earned Rs 1.25 crore on Friday, and registered a lower occupancy.
According to Pinkvilla, PVR and Cinepolis, two national cinema chains, had already collected Rs 75 lakh by 10 pm on Friday. Despite the belief that only big-budget films attract audiences to theaters, 12th Fail has proven otherwise with its limited number of screenings. The movie was only released in 600 screens, compared to Tejas, which had a much wider release.

The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Anurag Pathak, and draws from the struggles of millions of students who attempt the UPSC entrance exam. The film’s protagonist Manoj (Massey) flunks his 12th board exams but doesn’t lose hope. He restarts his academic journey and appears for the toughest competitive exam – UPSC. The film 12th Fail is anticipated to receive a more positive reception from the audience during the weekend due to the favorable reviews it has garnered. Shubhra Gupta, a film critic from The Indian Express, awarded the movie a 3-star rating and commented in her review that the film, starring Vikrant Massey, closely reflects real-life situations with characters that appear relatable and offer valuable life lessons intertwined with moments of inspiration.
