This iconic financial institution, now synonymous with Dalal Street, had humble beginnings. In the 1850s, a group of five stock brokers would gather under a Banyan tree near Mumbai Town Hall, presently the location of Horniman Circle. A decade later, they relocated to the junction of Meadows Street and what was then known as Esplanade Road, now called Mahatma Gandhi Road. As the number of brokers grew rapidly, they had to move their operations several times until, in 1874, they found a permanent home. This marked the birth of an official organization known as ‘The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association’ in 1875.
The BSE’s historical journey has seen its fair share of challenges, including a car bomb explosion in the basement during the 1993 Bombay bombings. However, it has also evolved with the times, becoming a Partner Exchange of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchange initiative in September 2012. Furthermore, in a significant move, BSE established India INX, India’s first international exchange, on 30 December 2016.
Innovation has been a hallmark of the BSE’s progress. In October 2018, it made history by becoming the first stock exchange in India to introduce commodity derivatives contracts for gold and silver.
An important milestone in its evolution occurred on 19 May 2007 when BSE underwent demutualization and corporatization, in compliance with the BSE (Corporatization and Demutualization) Scheme, 2005 notified by SEBI. Finally, on 3 February 2017, it was listed on the NSE (National Stock Exchange).”
“The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) operates efficiently through a sophisticated electronically-managed trading platform, simplifying financial transactions for traders and investors. This platform allows shareholders to place orders online, eliminating the need for external assistance from financial experts. This seamless process is made possible through direct BSE market access provided by the trading portal.
Investors looking to trade on the BSE share market can do so through a brokerage firm, which involves paying a predetermined fee to the broker. However, direct investment options are available primarily to high-volume investors with substantial BSE transactions. To ensure a secure trading environment, BSE employs the Bombay Online Trading Platform (BOLT).
The BSE Sensex stocks adhere to a T+2 transaction settlement system, meaning that each exchange transaction takes two days to complete processing. In India, the stock markets are overseen and regulated by the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Consequently, the BSE market is obligated to adhere to SEBI’s regulatory guidelines, ensuring the safety of investors and the efficiency of the capital market.”
