Why is Govardhan Pujan celebrated?
When Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on his smallest finger for seven days to protect the people of Braj from torrential rain, the cowherds and cowherdesses happily stayed under his shade. On the seventh day, Lord Krishna placed Govardhan back down and commanded the celebration of Annakoot festival, where heaps of food were offered. Since then, this festival has been celebrated as Annakoot.
