A new book uncovers the profound impact of the 1979 Morbi deluge on Narendra Modi, as he carried decaying bodies and grain sacks on his back during that time. This experience provided him with invaluable knowledge on disaster management, which he gained firsthand as a dedicated RSS worker.

He applied these teachings when he swiftly traveled to the earthquake-devastated region of Kutch in Gujarat in 2001, while serving as the chief minister, to the floods in Surat in 2006, where he was present on-site, to his visit to Kashmir as the prime minister during the floods in 2014, and to his management of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020.

The Bluekraft Digital Foundation has edited and compiled a new book titled ‘Resilient India – How Modi Transformed India’s Disaster Management Paradigm’, which has revealed significant insights. The book has been published by Rupa Publications.

In great detail, the book narrates the story of Modi’s time in Morbi, Gujarat in 1979. At the age of 29, as an RSS vibhag pracharak, he dedicated himself to the arduous task of rebuilding the devastated region after a dam breach led to a catastrophic flood. For more than six weeks, Modi tirelessly worked in the waterlogged areas, clearing mud, handling deceased animals and bodies, and conducting funeral ceremonies for the grieving families who had lost their dear ones.

According to the book, Pradip Vala, who resides in Morbi, reported that Modi and his team rescued a young priest who had taken refuge on top of a temple during the floods. Janakbhai Kotak, the former mayor of Rajkot who was with Modi in Morbi, stated that Modi personally carried 12 bodies out of the Shantivan Ashram and arranged for their cremation.

Kotak mentions in the book that due to the bodies remaining undiscovered for a span of four days, an unpleasant odor had permeated the atmosphere. The majority of individuals were hesitant to enter the premises. A comparable occurrence involving Modi’s endeavor is recounted, wherein 23 decomposing bodies were discovered at an old age home in Morbi.

Pambhar, another witness, has recounted the incident at the old age home where he was tasked with lifting a decaying body. He bravely attempted to lift it, but unfortunately, it slipped from his grasp. Recognizing his apprehension, Modi encouraged him to remain strong and reminded him of the significance of their work. Following this, Pambhar mustered the courage to proceed, and together they successfully retrieved and cremated all 23 decaying bodies, as stated in the book.

The book includes additional testimonies from local residents, affirming that Modi personally supervised the cleaning and renovation of a mosque in Morbi, ensuring that it was ready for Eid prayers. His intention was to enable people to worship on the auspicious day of the festival.

The book contains supplementary accounts from residents in the area, attesting to Modi’s direct oversight of the mosque’s cleaning and refurbishment in Morbi. His aim was to ensure its readiness for Eid prayers, allowing people to worship on this significant day of the festival.

According to the book, Modi wrote a letter of motivation to the youth of Morbi and made efforts to distribute copies of it to every household in order to combat the feeling of helplessness among the people. The book also mentions that Modi was actively involved in the cremation process and would carry sacks of grain on his back, as recalled by RSS worker Bhikubhai Pambhar.

The book states that Modi also proposed the idea of using cloth to wrap bodies, preventing them from being dismembered during the process of pulling or lifting. According to the book, this advice was deemed practical and beneficial.

In the book, Kishor Lakde from Vadodara is cited as stating that during the relief operation in Morbi, Modi demonstrated exceptional organization skills by forming teams of five individuals to clean residences that were inundated with mud and sludge.

Pradip Vale, another volunteer, remembers how Modi gave reassurance to a Congress worker that he would provide assistance after his house was flooded. Furthermore, Modi took the initiative to coordinate the reconstruction of houses in Morbi by mobilizing skilled workers. According to Narendra Sonagra from Vadodara, his father received a phone call from Modi requesting the support of technicians, electricians, and plumbers to aid in the rebuilding process. The book highlights that numerous RSS workers also received similar requests from Modi, resulting in a substantial influx of skilled workers to restore habitability in Morbi.

According to the book, numerous RSS volunteers remember how Modi’s methodical approach expedited the relief efforts. He categorized the relief work into different tasks, such as sanitation, meal preparation, food distribution, and transportation of affected individuals to Rajkot hospital.

Nagarbhai Chavda, another volunteer, reminisces about how Modi instructed volunteers to uphold the dignity of those receiving assistance. He emphasized that the aid provided belonged to the people as their rightful entitlement, rather than being a mere favor.

According to the book, Narendra Modi’s first experience in leading a disaster-handling exercise was in Morbi. Undoubtedly, it was a challenging time for him. However, this experience proved to be extremely valuable when he became the administrator during the aftermath of the 2001 Kutch earthquake, which was an even bigger disaster.
