OpenAI, the AI research firm headquartered in San Francisco and responsible for the development of ChatGPT, made a surprising and significant decision on Friday by removing Sam Altman from his position as CEO of the company, which is backed by Microsoft.
The OpenAI board of directors, in a formal letter, expressed their lack of confidence in Altman’s leadership abilities and announced his removal from the position. Additionally, they revealed that Mira Murati, the AI firm’s CTO, has been appointed as the interim successor to Altman.

History of OpenAI
OpenAI was established in 2015 as a non-profit organization with the primary objective of guaranteeing that the advantages of artificial general intelligence are accessible to all of humanity. In 2019, OpenAI underwent a restructuring process to enable the company to secure capital in order to pursue this mission, while still upholding the non-profit’s mission, governance, and oversight. The board of directors, consisting mostly of independent members, does not possess any equity in OpenAI. Taking over as interim CEO is Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, who will assume the position with immediate effect.
